It all first started in the East Coast, then the West Coast came out with the Gangsta Rap, now seems all the hip hop thats being played on the radio and on the cable shows all come out the Dirty South and Mid-West areas, why do they seem to be more popular then the East and West Coast rivals?

Who thinks Rap and Hip-Hop should be two different genres? 11

Mike asked:

I’m sick of people like Soulja Boy being considered rappers. Rap and Hip-hop should be made into two different genres. Rap would be all about lyrics, rhymes and delivery, and would consist of 2Pac, Biggie, Nas, Big L, Ice Cube, NWA, Immortal Technique, Lupe Fiasco, etc. Have Hip-hop for that poppy shit like, Soulja Boy, Flo-rida, etc. It would suck givin up the hip-hop name, but at least people like soulja boy could humiliate their own genre and not true rap. Plan B is to kill wack rappers lol. Seriously though we need to get more “Rap” on the radio and less “Hip-hop”. Im gonna call the local Top 40 style radio station(no exclusive hi-hop station around here) and get them to play the new Ice Cube song, “Gangsta rap made me do it”. That would make my day. Take back the airwaves!!

P.S.- I’m only 18 and I’m not brainwashed like most teens into thinkin Soulja Boy and the like are good. I’m a fan of true hip-hop.

Oh and going with the third answer, it doesn’t really matter to me who get who, rap could be good and hip-hop could be poppy or vice versa. No difference to me. I guess which ever preserves hip-hops roots better.
Oh and going with the 4th answer, I like both too. If im at a club and want to dance, “Low” by Flo-rida is a great song to listen too because it makes me want to get up and dance. But out side or that enviroment i’d much rather listen to Pac, Nas, Biggie, Ice cube, etc.

Y do so many people claim “hip-hop is dead?”? 11

i totally disagree. 1st off, some people dont realize theres a difference BETWEEN “hip-hop” and “rap”. just because ‘gangsta’ rap is whats hot and played on radio’s, doesn’t mean hip-hop is dead……..what about common, kanye, lupe, and mos def….they’re tru hip-hop,(holdin it down)…..while wayne, 50, t-pain, and plies do (gangsta)rap…..they’re in 2 seperate categories….so stop sweatin’ ‘em. WHAT DO YALL THINK………..

Does hip hop still have a future? 7

I remember when hip hop was about having fun and battling skills with one another on the microphone, now its all gangsta rap, put two slugs dead in that fools chest, or big booty, and so much profanity. Can we ever go back to the real essence of what hip hop use to be or is this it? Why do you need to be shot 9 times to make it in the hip hop business? Why is this business so dangerous with Biggy and Tupac being shot over some bs, what has hip hop come to these days? What do you think?
