Who thinks Rap and Hip-Hop should be two different genres? 11

Mike asked:
I’m sick of people like Soulja Boy being considered rappers. Rap and Hip-hop should be made into two different genres. Rap would be all about lyrics, rhymes and delivery, and would consist of 2Pac, Biggie, Nas, Big L, Ice Cube, NWA, Immortal Technique, Lupe Fiasco, etc. Have Hip-hop for that poppy shit like, Soulja Boy, Flo-rida, etc. It would suck givin up the hip-hop name, but at least people like soulja boy could humiliate their own genre and not true rap. Plan B is to kill wack rappers lol. Seriously though we need to get more “Rap” on the radio and less “Hip-hop”. Im gonna call the local Top 40 style radio station(no exclusive hi-hop station around here) and get them to play the new Ice Cube song, “Gangsta rap made me do it”. That would make my day. Take back the airwaves!!

P.S.- I’m only 18 and I’m not brainwashed like most teens into thinkin Soulja Boy and the like are good. I’m a fan of true hip-hop.
Oh and going with the third answer, it doesn’t really matter to me who get who, rap could be good and hip-hop could be poppy or vice versa. No difference to me. I guess which ever preserves hip-hops roots better.
Oh and going with the 4th answer, I like both too. If im at a club and want to dance, “Low” by Flo-rida is a great song to listen too because it makes me want to get up and dance. But out side or that enviroment i’d much rather listen to Pac, Nas, Biggie, Ice cube, etc.

THEY SHOULD BE TWO DIFFRENT> I DONT UNDERSTAND WHY THERE NOT
Well i love hip hop and i agree with u but i cant stand some r.a.p, the reason i say r.a.p is cuz r.a.p really stands for Retards Attempting Poetry
i agree 100%
but i wouldn’t even call soulja boy and them hip hop, true hip hop is jedi mind tricks, cunning lyricists etc.
soulja boy is more like pussy rap
or pop hop
Hip Hop= Great Lyrics, Interesting Topics, DARING TO BE DIFFERENT (Tech N9ne.), Great Beats, and Cool Artists.
Rap= Lollipop, YAH!, Hand Clap, and Tip Witcha Boy.
@Dominic. That’s true. But I think they should Different. Underground is like Hip Hop (The old good stuff.) Commercial are idiots just trying to make Money. Of course their going to be “Rappers”.
i like both and i consider them two different things…ppl r crazy these days
No.
Hip-Hop is a genre. Rap is a part of that genre.
Hip-Hop is the “music” and rapping is the “action” associated with hip-hop.
They’re not 2 different genres.
They’re are a lot of sub-genres of hip-hop, which is what makes Soulja Boy different from Common.
Understand?
yeah man i totally agree with you , your right
Hip Hop = Rapping, DJing, graffiti and breakdancing. And also beatboxing, fashion and slang.
I do bcuz hiphop has music going wit it too ike linkin park, and rap has killer beats like Eminem…50 cent n shyt
I wanted to agree with you, until I read the details.
There is a serious division in this particular between those “Artists” and those “Commercially Gifted Performers”. but this can be said for most genres of music. They play “poppy” songs because that’s what the kids listen too, and thats what makes the money. If the radio only played real “artists of music”… we wouldn’t have any radio…because the system is set up to promote those popular a.k.a “Pop” music, not innovative performers who deserve it.
I believe the two are separate…but we have to internally differentiate between them, because they are derived from the same root. Just look at how many different so-called genres are in rock music. Just because “grunge” and “metal” and “alternative” have vastly different sounds, would we classify one as something other than “Rock”.
Rap/Hip Hop is growing and maturing as all types of music do…and one day we will be able to classify and title all species as a multiple unit working as one.
Until then…we ask what will stand the test of time…The Artist’s or The Pop Stars?
Nope….
If you mean whether there should be a genre called Hip-Pop then yes put all that crappy fake ass hiphop wannabes into that genre but you can’t say that people like Soulja Boy are true hip hop heads.
I see hiphop as a culture, its the combination of emceeing, b-boys, graffiti , beatboxing etc. Rap is just an aspect of the hiphop culture and I don’t think you can separate them as genres. However in saying that I am more likely to say I LOVE HIPHOP rather than RAP.
